The Camino de Baztan (or Camino de Urdax-Baztan) is the section of the Camino de Santiago from Bayonne to Pamplona. It was a contemporary medieval route to that of Roncesvalles and Somport, preferred by a part of the pilgrims due to the lower altitude of the Otsondo Pyrenean pass compared to the Ibañeta pass. The Urdax Monastery, founded as a hospital for pilgrims by Sancho VI the Wise, dates from the 12th century.
The Camino de Baztan meets the Camino Frances at the medieval bridge of Arre, in front of the convent of Trinidad de Arre (with a pilgrims' hostel), 4.4 km from the center of Pamplona.
The Camino de Baztan is only suitable for hikers and, more generally, for people in good physical shape and accustomed to the mountain roads. There are no dangerous or aerial steps, nor capital difficulties, but there are stony paths and in very poor condition that, moreover, get muddy easily; to this, we must add the unevenness typical of the mid-mountain. This path, in terms of hardness, is comparable to the first stages of the Primitive Way. More information: Gronze
